LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: Devilution Festival 2012

Wigan’s music scene is currently being dominated by the varied and exciting line ups that are being hosted by DAVESTOCK PROMOTIONS. Talent Pool had a word with co-operator Dave Kaaria about this year’s DEVILUTION FESTIVAL, taking place at The Boulevard on Saturday 15th September.

The event was inspired by a venue in the town that offered and upstairs and downstairs stage – the thought of doing something along those lines really excited Dave and so he decided to attempt hosting such a promotion after discussion with co-organiser Seddy, of metal band Derision. It took us a while to find the ideal venue but it was eventually found in The Boulevard, who fully supported Davestock Promotions to do it despite it being a completely new concept for the bar.

Devilution offers a heavier full band stage with acts on the line up playing punk, blues, rock, metal, reggae, ska and a second stage dedicated to lots of chilled out acoustic acts. I think if you’re really looking for something different, then check out Circus Insane! The Hicks always put on a good show and there’s Gunpowder Plot, who have recently toured Europe. John Fairhurst who is an exceptional Blues/folk guitarist and then maybe if you’re looking for something more on the indie rock side, try Roger The Mascot who recently played YNOT festival. But all the bands are some of the best around in the opinion of Dave and Seddy, coming from as far Wales and Nottingham. Headliners Intensive Square are ones to watch too, played Bloodstock last year and supported Soilent Green and have supported Xerath too.

The organisers have every intention to take Devilution to the stage of an outdoor festival and also push it one step further each year and get more signed bands. Dave concluded that “There are lots of good bands around around the Northwest. Venues and promoters should not just stick to locals but bring in new out of town bands too and just keep doing gigs. If you have a badly attended one, don’t get too disheartened and move on and keep doing it. I think free entry gigs always helps. Don’t want to see this ‘how many people can you bring or how many tickets can you sell, no matter where you’re from’.”

You can check out DEVILUTION FESTIVAL for yourself on Facebook and if you wish to put it in your diary, it’s taking place from 12.00PM on Saturday 15th September 2012.
