In a scene that is over saturated with noisy metal bands, it is hard to stand out from the crowd with an individual sound. After seeing HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM a number of times, and being impressed with the originality and consistency in delivering a solid set every time, Colin decided to catch up with the lads from HWHAP to find out what they have been up to lately and just how they can deliver their live show with such impact!
Following the release of HWHAP’s first album, “Ascension” late in 2011, the band have encountered lots of positive feedback both locally and internationally. The members seem to be hell bent on recreating the sounds from the album in a live environment, which I would imagine is quite tricky considering the different layers, samples and effects that make up the heavy sound behind HWHAP. Drummer, Tom, explained that “It’s not always possible to recreate the 60 guitar layers live. But, we have really set in with our live rig. At first, it was my job as drummer to keep us all in time using headphones linked to the backing tracks, but we recently upgraded and threw in ear monitors into the mix! Being able to play to a click really helps, if you go out of time… that’s it! Luckily it has not happened so far. We recently upgraded our backing system as well, so our live shows are even more intense, in ear monitoring is really helping to get our set tight!”
Hitting the live circuit hard with this intense sound to boast about, HWHAP have worked at boosting their profile steadily since the release of Ascension, playing with amazing bands and great promoters across the country. The initial response was very encouraging and the album has since gone out to people all over the world, including a few Russian download websites! Ascension receives regular downloads and has been featured on many websites, such as got-djent.com.
To follow Ascension, HWHAP have also released a 3 track covers collection in aid of Macmillan cancer support, you can get both downloads for free at these links:

Currently, HWHAP are taking some time out to work on their next release which will be released early next year. Tom went on to say “We are getting some help from some amazing people and hopefully will get that push that sends our music out to everyone possible!”
Having played witness to quite a few HWHAP shows, I have always enjoyed the mix of brutal metal mixed with really catchy melodies. The band’s writing process seems to have been refined over the years: “Our song writing process has been tried and tested.. We normally start with one of our guitarists creating the basic structure of a song, then we start pre-production and build it up layer by layer in the HWHAP cave (our studio) until our faces have melted! Stephen (guitarist) is a musical genius, he listens to all sorts of mad music from the heavy metals to mega drive chip choons and we can see that reflected in our recordings where we don’t just stick to guitars bass drums and vocals, but add all sorts of synths, sounds and effects into the mix. A few bands that capture our inspiration would be Periphery, Monuments, TesseracT to some older names such as American Headcharge and Slipknot.”
With some of HWHAP members studying in their final years of university and the writing/pre-production underway for the band’s next release, the live booking may be a bit thin on the ground for the next few months. But, the lads have got massive plans for 2013. Watch this space!
